Peace Journey 2009: one congregation’s witness

The Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church in Wichita, Kansas, is completing a year-long peace witness. We have called it the “LAMC Peace Journey 2009.”
The Peace Action Committee invited all congregation members to make commitments to specific peace actions. At a worship service early in the first quarter of the year, members brought written commitment statements to the front of the church. The commitments promised both inward actions such as memorizing Scripture passages or keeping a peace journal, and outward actions such as writing letters to public officials and participating in demonstrations against the war in Iraq.

The families of two recently deceased long-term LAMC peace activists, Harold Plenert and Peter Bartel, decided to use memorial funds to purchase a limestone Peace Pole for the church lawn. The Peace Pole was dedicated following the worship service on September 13. It proclaimed in ten languages the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” Several other congregation members placed Peace Poles on their front lawns.

Peace Ceremony and participation in the Meditative Vigil in Toronto Canada

“Just a note to let you know that we participated in the meditative vigil and conducted a Peace Ceremony in Toronto Canada at our City Hall from 6:30 pm to 8pm on Dec 21st.  About 30 people gathered at Toronto City Hall for the Peace Ceremony and Celebration.  Patty Hill acted as master of ceremonies and we began with Karthik Raj saying a Sanskrit Peace Prayer or Shloka that set the tone for our event.  Tamara Penn read the universal prayer – The Great Invocation, Lorne Gould read a tribute to long-time organizer Stephen Ginsberg who passed away in September and Lorne Gould and Penny Winestock performed a Peace song.  We then began the Peace Ceremony – we did the inclusive version listing every country and saying May Peace Prevail in ….  read by Barbara Bushe.  Each participant held the land and peoples of the country in their hearts while they held the flag.  Our event concluded with a talk  – Creating a Thought Image of Peace, by Freda Kemp, a song from Paul Chaput – Praying for Peace and a story from Patty Hill.  We would like to thank the World Peace Prayer Society for creating this beautiful event and for hosting the 24 hour Internet Marathon.  Thank-you thank-you!”

MPPOE and IDP celebrated in schools-Japan

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Mrs. Kaoru Oue has been working with Ohmika Elementary School and Ibaraki Christian Junior and Senior High School for 10 years on the International Day of Peace.

She talked to the school Headmaster about the importance of the IDP initiative and suggested the use of the international flag set.

hey talked and came to the conclusion to include the Message, May Peace Prevail On Earth and to celebrate the IDP with the students as a school event and display the flag set.

Ohmika Elementary School displays the flag set at their school Olympic event and the Headmaster explained the importance of IDP and to keep peace ever present in our hearts.

Ibaraki Christian Junior and Senior High School has their IDP memorial worship and displays the flag sets each year.

Since, the Message and IDP continue to be well received by the teachers, students and parents.

I am attaching the photos for each.

Peace Poles in Tutzing, Germany

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

It’s so precious, interesting and valuable to learn the history—the story behind the planting of Peace Poles.

Mr. Jakob Blaette of Germany was on a business trip in Japan. In Kamakura in front of the Hokoku-ji Temple he saw a Peace Pole at the temple’s entrance.

Since then it was his wish to have a Peace Pole planted by his garden in Tutzing outside Munich/Germany.

He went to Tokyo’s Department Store Takashimaya (Ginza!) and asked the shop assistant where he can obtain such a Peace Pole.

The helpful shop assistant did not know but noted the address of the hotel in which Mr. Blaette`s was staying in Tokyo.

After a couple of days Mr. Blaette received a phone call from that shop assistant saying that the Peace Pole can be ordered by WPPS in Ichikawa and that Mr. Blaette

should contact a professor by the name of Hedeo Nakazawa. Mr. Blaette went to meet him.  To Mr. Blaette`s great surprise and joy he learned from Mr. Nakazawa that a Peace Pole will be gifted to him, to plant in is garden in Tutzing.

In Mr. Blaetter`s home town Tutzing another Peace Pole was planted on the occasion of the 100the Anniversary of the local Benedictine nuns.

 2009, OCTOBER 2Oth

A third Peace Pole was planted in Tutzing outside the Catholic St. Joseph Church.

The pole was wish of Father Peter Brummer and donated by Mr. Blaette.
