Montessori at the Marina Peace Pole Dedication-Denver, Colorado-USA

October 4th, 2012

Montessori at the Marina is now an International Peace Site!

Today we officially dedicated our school as an International Peace Site. It was a very nice ceremony as we discussed the importance of peace both within ourselves and in our environment. All of the students played a part in our dedication ceremony, and it was beautiful! Ms. Kellylynn in Primary 1 read a story titled, We Can All Get Along. Then they played a song titled, I Think You’re Wonderful, and while the song was playing the children passed necklaces to each other which read “I Think You’re Special.” Primary 2 carried out and presented our new World Peace Flag. Primary 3 beautifully sang the song Light A Candle for Peace. And Primary 4 carried out/presented our new official peace plaque.

We have attached pictures of the event. Our new Peace Pole is out on the playground, and the Peace Pole reads “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic. As some of you may or may not know, Dr. Maria Montessori was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1949, 1950 and 1951. Each nomination acknowledged her work toward achieving world peace through education, which is why it is an important part of our curriculum.

Girl Scout Gold Award Peace Pole Project-Walton, New York-USA

June 6th, 2012

Since November of 2011, Jim Dugan and High School Junior and Girl Scout Mikaelan Stuligross had been planning a World Peace Flag Ceremony that occurred on June 6th of 2012. Mikaelan had been working on her Girl Scout Gold Award Project and meeting with elementary school students in Walton, New York once each month and giving a presentation on one Country from each Continent on the planet. Her main goal was to teach the younger students about tolerance through diversity and how we really do have so much in common, after all. Jim Dugan and Ann Marie Robustelli went to the Townsend Elementary School in Walton where Jim led the World Peace Flag Ceremony with the entire 3rd grade as flag bearers and the 2nd through 5th grades in attendance. The Ceremony was covered on the local television and radio stations and was attended by the Mayor and many local dignitaries. There is now a Peace Pole on the Townsend Elementary School stage in perpetuity that was also dedicated on that day.

Sundance Montessori School has joined The Peace Pole Project-Folsom, California-USA

April 21sth, 2012

Hi Ann Marie (Robustelli),

Sundance Montessori School has finally joined the Peace Pole Project. Since 2007 we have been trying to get a Peace Pole on our campus, with various teachers and faculty involved. But something always got in the way of us ever actually completing the project–until April 21, 2012.

During our Annual Ice Cream Social, we set aside time for our Peace Pole dedication Ceremony. The event brought together current students, as well as alumni students, and drew in a crowd of about 100 people! We chose languages specific to our community: Arabic, Chinese, English, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Spanish, and a special message for our families: May Peace be in our Homes. (Italian was actually chosen to honor Maria Montessori, the Italian physician who pioneered the Montessori method of education).

During the ceremony I spoke about the significance of the Peace Pole honoring the work of Masahisa Goi to spread the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” I also spoke of the founder of our school’s pedagogy, Maria Montessori, and her work to transform society by changing education as a means for peace. For her work in education she was nominated for the nobel peace prize three times (1949-1951).

After the ribbon was cut, one of our teachers led the children to sing “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing,” after which, the children passed out ribbons with the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” that the children had handwritten.

It was a lovely project to take part in because it brought our community together in many ways: parents donated money towards the purchase of the Peace Pole, on a special garden day, three of the fathers of the school dug the hole, poured the cement and leveled the Peace Pole, several businesses in the area donated flowers and other supplies for the dedication ceremony, the children helped write out the messages on the ribbons and they planted all the flowers around the Peace Pole.

We were fortunate to have local community newspaper, ZOOM, cover our event and do a write up in their publication. We also posted the event on our Facebook page.

Our Peace Pole now stands at the very front entrance of our campus, for all passerbys to see. It also greets everyone who comes onto our campus each day. We think it has really transformed our campus, and added an extra touch of tranquility to our school.

We are very honored to be a part of The World Peace Prayer Society and the Peace Pole Project.

Thank you,
Brenda Rios, Director of Admissions

Peace Pole Art Project-Spackenkill High School, Poughkeepsie, NY-USA

May 22nd, 2011

Roberto Romani’s National Art Honor Society class at Spackenkill High School in Poughkeepsie, New York is the first to pilot the “Peace Pole Art Project.”

This ground breaking project has groups of young artists creating a Peace Pole of their own design, bearing the universal message, May Peace Prevail On Earth.

To date, several hundred students are now working on their own Peace Poles. The Peace Poles are then planted on school campus’ or in public places within the community.

On May 22nd, 2011 Jim Dugan of The World Peace Sanctuary and The Peace Pole Project addressed the crowd of students, teachers and parents at the annual National Art Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Jim spoke about the correlation of ideals (and mission) of the National Honor Art Society and The World Peace Prayer Society. Jim said, “these young artists continue the work of the Founder of The World Peace Prayer Society, Mr. Masahisa Goi, who was also an artist.”
