Ceremony to Erect Peace Pole in Abingdon led by Mayor, Vale of White Horse – ENGLAND
April 6, 2024
A Peace Pole which signifies a desire for peace throughout the world has been erected in Abingdon.
More than 50 people from various nationalities gathered on April 6 at St Ethelwold’s House garden for the Peace Pole’s unveiling.
The ceremony was concluded with a reading of a poem, after which everyone present spoke together a Community Affirmation which started: “We who stand here in sorrow for the victims of all violence today declare our hope in the future.”
Songs were sung and, after the ceremony, attendees were treated to the tea and cake.
The event was led by the town mayor, councillor Gwyneth Lewis, who said “Abingdon is a town of peace, represented by a mayor of peace”, adding that the Peace Pole had the full support of Abingdon Town Council.
Ms Lewis has seen many Peace Poles in other countries during her work for the United Nations.
During her time as mayor, Ms Lewis has also started the process of applying to become a recognized ‘Town of Sanctuary’.
This is another global initiative which supports peace and those suffering from conflict.
There are Peace Poles in more than 200 countries, and the Peace Pole movement is a non-governmental organisation recognised by the United Nations.
Each Peace Pole bears the message “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in different languages on each of its four or six sides.
