Dropping of nuclear bomb on Hiroshima marked in Dunedin with International Peace Pole, NEW ZEALAND

University of Otago peace and conflict studies student Sonja Dobson lays down a wreath around the peace pole at the Tūhura Otago Museum Reserve yesterday to mark Hiroshima Day.

Also commemorating Hiroshima Day are Japanese exchange students from Yasuda Girls’ High School, who sang their school song.

Dunedin Quaker Committee member and event co-organiser Elizabeth Duke said each year commemorations were held for those who were killed and for survivors who had all sorts of injuries because of the effects of nuclear weapons.

There was a moment of silence at 11.15am to mark the exact time the bomb was dropped, at 8.15am on August 6, 1945 (Japan time).

Two students from Otago Girls’ High School spoke about a commitment to peace.
