Americus, GA – The Americus Rotary Club, in partnership with Americus Main Street, has proudly installed a Rotary Peace Pole in Rylander Park, marking a significant milestone for Downtown Americus as a beacon of peace and unity. This internationally recognized symbol of harmony stands as a silent prayer for global peace, bearing the message “May Peace Prevail On Earth” in multiple languages.
The Peace Pole movement has inspired tens of thousands of installations across nearly every country in the world, each serving as a lasting monument to the collective hopes and dreams of the human family. The Americus Peace Pole is the first of its kind in the area, reinforcing the community’s dedication to fostering peace and inclusivity.

Angela Smith, a Rotarian and past president of the Americus Rotary Club, emphasized the intentionality behind the language selection featured on the Peace Pole. “Rotary was very deliberate about the languages chosen, particularly Japanese, to ensure that our sister city, Konu [Miyoshi City], Japan, was represented. The bond between our communities is strong, and this Peace Pole is a testament to that enduring connection.”
Laura McConatha, a Positive Peace Activator and Americus Rotarian, highlighted the significance of this initiative. “Peacebuilding is one of the primary focus areas of Rotary International. By placing this Peace Pole in the heart of our downtown, we are making a powerful statement about our community’s commitment to promoting peace and goodwill.”
Rotary District 6900 District Governor Gordon Owens was also present for the installation, offering words of reflection on the importance of peace within. “You can’t build peace in your community until you yourself have inner peace. This Peace Pole is a reminder that true change begins within each of us before it can ripple outward.”

Qaijuan Willis, Director of Americus Main Street and the Downtown Development Authority, and an Americus Rotarian, expressed his gratitude for the collaboration with Rotary and the ongoing enhancements to Rylander Park. “We are incredibly thankful for the partnership with the Americus Rotary Club in bringing the first Peace Pole to our area. I believe it is safe to say that Rylander Park has become the adopted child of the Americus Rotary Club, as they have been instrumental in securing grants from Rotary International to add string lights, additional landscaping, and much-needed trash receptacles to the park. Their commitment to improving our downtown spaces has made a lasting impact, and this Peace Pole is yet another meaningful contribution.”
The Americus Main Street Board joined members of the Americus Rotary Club in the installation ceremony, underscoring the spirit of unity and shared purpose. The Peace Pole now stands as a timeless symbol in Rylander Park, inspiring all who visit to reflect on the importance of peace, both locally and globally.
