Peace Pole Planted at The Green Village in Le Morne, Mauritius

April 5, 2025

On Saturday, April 5th, at The Green Village in Le Mourne, Mauritius, artist Uta Galuska and her husband, Dr. Joachim Galuska, planted at the entrance of Green Village, a center for sustainable development on the island of Mauritius.

The Green Village is an event and community platform with a sustainable mindset in a wonderful natural setting in Le Morne, Mauritius.

Dr. Joachim Galuska opened the ceremony with thoughtful words.

“We are happy that you are all here today to celebrate the opening and unveiling of the Peace Pole. We need peace, more than ever, because unfortunately there are still wars.

We humans are different:
in skin color,
in gender,
in religion,
origin,
wealth,
political convictions,
opinions and interests.
And, of course, there are conflicts as a result.

But we can talk to each other and resolve these conflicts. Because at the bottom of our hearts and souls, we are all human beings. We are part of the earth, our planet, we belong together. The Peace Pole wants to remind us of this. Again and again when we pass by.

It originated in Japan from Mahahisa Goi, a Japanese peace fighter. The first peace poles were erected in Japan in the mid-seventies last century. Since 1980, around 250,000 peace poles have been erected internationally.

There is a “Global Peace Pole Network” based in the USA, which documents the erection of peace poles and spreads the message that peace should prevail in the world.

As far as we know, there are two other peace poles in Mauritius- One at the Brahma Kumaris Center in Rose Bell. It was erected in September 2021. And the other one in Baie du Cap we installed last year 2024.

We are also happy to create a sign of peace here in The Green Village, a spiritual, ecological and peaceful place. It is a colorful peace pole, just as Africa is colorful, nature is colorful and Mauritius is colorful.”

And then, in closing, Uta and Joachim shared a poem that he wrote… Title “You Live”

English: “You Live
Not only I live, but you also live.
Life resides not only within me, but also within you.
Life exists not only as “I,” but also as “you.”
I can sense your presence within you.
You are here!
You are living in this very moment as you.
You are more than everything I perceive of you.
You are more than everything you think of yourself.
You are a magnificent soul!

Mauritian Creole: “To Viv
Pa sélman mwa ki viv, mé twa osi.
Lavi pa rézid pa sélman dan mwa, mé osi dan twa.
Lavi pa éksist pa sélman kouma “mwa,” mé osi kouma “twa.”
Mo kapab santi to prézans dan twa.
To la la!
To viv an se moman kouma twa.
To pli gran ki tou sa mo pans twa.
To pli gran ki tou sa twa swa pans twa.
To enn gran lalimier!
