Letter:  We need to speak out on deforesting – PEACE POLE to be gifted in honor of movement.

February-2024

I really appreciate Moira Dempsey’s Feb. 13 letter “They believe they can keep logging.” Deforesting has many negative effects on our environment. To our advantage, forests also provide high-quality drinking water, as Moira stated.Another approach to curbing logging is to plant trees. Last year the Philomath Rotary Club teamed with the city of Philomath to plant six trees at the fairgrounds, and two more on Arbor Day at Skirvin Park.

This spring, our club is donating a Peace Pole that will be planted in the new Paul J. Cochran Veterans Memorial Park. Our club’s Peace Pole project certifies that 10 trees will be planted on the African continent on our behalf.

We need to speak out on deforesting, and to be people of action by planting more trees, both locally and globally.
